Threatening, enveloping
Injured children in fear crouch down
Fear of death consumes God’s chosen

Darkness surrounds the righteous
Clouds suffocate the children
A church quakes and reels
People are lost
Where are you O God

Lightning fractures the sky
Hail batters the ground
Rocks fail, earth splits
Edifices fall
Have you forsaken us O God

As all else is reeling
A cross stands true
Testament to love
Foundational; enduring
God bursting through

A rising church
Children healed
Resurrection in action
New Faith, new life
Immanuel, God is here

Getting back to Eden

We live in a world that to all intents and purposed doesn’t work in the way that it should.   We only have to look at the news sources to see new ways that humans find to damage others.   Most often it is the poor and weak who are taken advantage of, sometimes sold into slavery, often victims of ideological conflict in one shape or another. How then can we preach the Good News, in the face of illness, of poverty, of hatred, of fear, of dishonesty? We see this incongruity in Psalm 82, where the psalmist calls out to God, “How long will you judge unjustly, and show partiality to the wicked?”   The psalmist continues to berate God, reminding him of his responsibilities to give justice to the weak, to look after the orphan, to rescue the weak and needy.   As usual with the psalms, it is an open and frank relationship enjoyed with God.   The closing lines can be seen as an affirmation of God’s lordship over all the earth, whilst conversely, the psalmist ...

prayer of thanksgiving

Tomorrow will be my accreditation service as a local preacher.  Another milestone on what has been a fascinating journey so far.  Combine this with my "day job" as a Physiotherapist with injection and prescribing skills then I can have no complaints.  This prayer I wrote specifically for tomorrows service as I wanted to both reflect a thanksgiving from the local preachers elect (there are 5 of us) and for all in the congregation who are also called by God to minister in a variety of ways. Father, we thank you. We thank you for continuing to call forth people to act as Prophets, teachers and Preachers willing to speak out about the new world you have called into being.   A world based on values of righteousness, justice, humility and Holiness. God the Storm Calmer

   In Mark’s story of the events on Galilee, there is a sense of the disciples relating to Jesus as a Father figure.   They were in trouble and they turned to the figure asleep in the back of their boat.   The one who they had come to belief could fix anything.   It also seems that they bothered him until he woke up.   But there is so much more to this story than just that.   Mark shows us here that even the forces of nature answer to Jesus.   This fits right into Jesus’ role as leading the final exodus.   Just as God is seen saving the Israelites from the Egyptians when they had to cross the red sea (you’ll find that in Exodus Ch 14).   Jesus here commands the forces of nature, and they immediately obey.   It is clear then that Mark is making the claim that Jesus is none other than the God of Israel come in human form.   No wonder the apostles were terrified.   Jesus as a nice friendly and loving human is one thi...
